Usually, there are 5 types of pins in the market: Standard Shutter Pin, Long shutter pins, Two part Tension Pin, Spring Loaded Replacement Pin., and shutter Tension pins.
Standard Shutter Pins
Also named as Nylon Shutter Pins, are generally used for new construction of shutters with movable louvers or slats. One end of the pin is inserted into each end of the louver, the other side of the pin is inserted into the shutter frame or stile. Each pin has molded into itself a washer, this washer prevents the louver from rubbing against the stile. They can however be used in conjunction with the Spring replacement pins. When re-installing a louver into an existing panel, you can save money by using a standard shutter pin on one side of the louver, and a Repair Pin on the other.
Long Shutter Pins
Long pins is longer than standard pins, it can hold louvers and stile better. One end of the pin is inserted into each end of the louver, the other side of the pin is inserted into the shutter frame or stile. Each pin has molded into itself a washer, this washer prevents the louver from rubbing against the stile.
Two Part Tension Pins
Two part Tension Pins, or Louver Tension Pins, with same uses as standard shutter pins, are also used for new construction of shutters. As the name implies, this pin have two parts and will add tension to the louvers in the shutters. There are four embossing parts on the top of washer, which wil fix the washer part on the end of stile, also four embossing parts under the washer and be tightened with louver. It always is used on PVC/poly/faux wood shutters
Spring loaded Replacement Pins
Otherwise known as Louver Repair Pins or Spring Loaded Louver Pins or Retractable Shutter Pins, these pins are spring loaded, usually used for re-installing louvers that have come out, without having to separate the shutter panel. The spring loaded pins are used on one end of the louver and a standard shutter pin (or two part tension pin) on the other end. Because it is spring loaded, it retracts back into itself becoming flush with the inside of the shutter stile. Simply move the louver over the pin, when the hole at the end of the louver finds the pin, the repair pin will extend into the hole and secure the louver in place.
Shutter Tension Pins
They support the louvers in the shutter panel, and allow the louver to rotate. The narrow end of the nylon pin is inserted into the louver. The larger end of the nylon pin is inserted into the stile or frame. A washer is molded into the pin which prevents the louver from rubbing the inside of the shutter stile allowing for smooth operation of the louvers. Two fins are moulded into part of pin that is inserted into the louver. A spur is moulded into the other half of the pin that is inserted into the shutter stile. The spur and fins are designed to prevent the louver from moving freely. It is generally only necessary to install these pins on two or three louvers in a panel.
